The world number one will now play Radek Stepanek who beat Feliciano Lopez. There were victories for Sharapova and Venus Williams who will now meet each other in round three. Venus defeated French player Alize Cornet 6-3 6-3, while Maria Sharapova had the same scoreline as her first round match with a 6-0 6-0 victory over Misaki Doi of Japan.
